Discover how architect Victor Caban-Diaz developed his first duplex project in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. I originally interviewed Victor on the podcast back in May of 2016 (episode number 157).

At that time, his dream of developing a multi-family project was just a dream. Fast forward seven years, and he has just finished the 3,400 sf duplex in the South River Middle neighborhood of Ft. Lauderdale.

In this episode, you'll discover the lessons Caban-Diaz learned while developing this project, including how increases in building products almost crushed the project.

Is the architecture industry collapse inevitable? Recently, Business of Architecture director Rion Willard watched a YouTube video, Principles for Dealing with the Changing World Order by author and investor Ray Dalio.

Dalio writes, "I believe the world is changing in big ways that haven’t happened before in our lifetimes but have many times in history, so I knew I needed to study past changes to understand what is happening now and help me to anticipate what is likely to happen."

In the video, Dalio explores what he calls the "Big Cycle" of the rise and decline of nation-states and empires.

The principles that Dalio shares eerily echo the current state of the architectural industry. Listen to this episode to discover how this trend is reflected in the rise and decline of the architectural industry.

As architects, we are passionate about many subjects including the built environment, social issues, sustainability, and more.

Is the focus on “activism” by our national advocates (the American Institute of Architects, and Royal Institute of British Architects) a double-edged sword?

In this episode, Lance Cayko, principal of the architecture firm F9 Productions and co-host of the popular podcast Inside the Firm shares his take on the focus on activism in the architectural industry.

Have we as architects betrayed ourselves? Do we have anyone to blame but ourselves for the erosion of responsibility and control in the building and design process? Do we have anyone to blame but ourselves for the chronically low wages, layoffs, and cyclical business cycles? The good news here is if we're to blame for the problem, we can also be the solution. In this episode of the Business of Architecture podcast, Enoch Sears and Rion Willard discuss this vital question.

Today Rion Willard and Enoch Sears discuss strategies for taking home a 7-figure salary as an architect. Often the conversation in the architecture industry is about how little architects make and how pitiful salaries are.

In this episode, we flip that conversation around and share insights based on our conversations with practitioners who are taking home a million dollars or more in personal income.

If you've run an architectural practice for any amount of time, you've probably had clients who tried to avoid paying an invoice.

Architect Marina Rubina is an alumnus of the Business of Architecture SMART Practice™ program.

She is a Registered Architect in the states of New Jersey and California and is a LEED Accredited Professional. She holds Master’s degrees in both Architecture and Structural Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley. Marina is involved in the life of her community as a member of Princeton’s municipal Site Plan Review Advisory Board, a board member of Princeton Future, and a founding member of Princeton Progressive Action Group.

In this episode of the Business of Architecture podcast, you'll hear how Rubina pivoted from a residentially focused practice to a practice focused on "livable lovable density." You'll also hear stories of how Rubina collected from two clients who didn't want to pay while respecting her boundaries in a professional manner.

"Damn all architects, the rich man’s folly," writes opinion journalist Giles Coren in a recent issue of The Times (original article here).

Is this article perpetuating inaccurate tropes of the architectural profession, or is there some truth in this scathing critique of architects where the writer states, "Your project’s four months late and 75 grand over budget but what did you expect when you hired a speccy design wonk?"

Every architectural project isn't a fit. One of the challenges of managing a small architectural practice today is managing the appropriate workflow.

Having too much work causes problems.

Too much work leads to:

  • Increased project timelines making unhappy clients
  • Procrastinating important tasks like invoicing
  • Team members over-loaded and feeling behind

Today Enoch Sears and Rion Willard discuss why every architectural project isn't a fit and how to say 'no' to the wrong projects.

Nunzio’s career began over 38 years ago at HKS, where he created the HKS hospitality group.  Since then, he has completed more than 60,000 hotel rooms throughout the world and is largely credited with having made Cabo San Lucas into the luxury vacation destination that it is today.

Today I will be speaking with KOVA Vice President Dan Sullivan, AIA, NCARB––a licensed architect who has never really practiced “traditional” architecture––has set out to develop circularity-driven building solutions to enhance building performance and longevity from the inside out.

His initial experience lay with whimsical designs in China and Israel, Burning Man’s Catacomb of Veils, and progressive, geometric architecture practice. As Head of Design for Google Architecture’s R+D Lab, Dan discovered his passion for building solutions that lend to a healthier built environment, enhance end-user outcomes, and improve neuroaesthetics.

It was through his professional experience that he realized just how wasteful architecture and construction can be and he has set out to remedy this conundrum. At KOVA, he is constantly challenging the status quo while addressing climate change, the psychology of space, and the material waste produced by the industry.

On today’s episode we will be discussing:

  • The emergence of new collaborative business models closing the gap between construction, products, software and design
  • How KOVA operates across numerous domains
  • Skunk works, Google R&D labs and the importance of play and experimentation
