This week, I'm speaking with Jake Rudin and Erin Pellegrino, Founders of Out of Architecture, a career consulting firm interested in exploring the value of their skills both in and out of the architectural profession.

Jake has a decade of experience in building things from the ground up. At Adidas, he leads teams in Computational Design, Digital Technologies, and Pattern Engineering.

Previously, Jake was the Director of Business Development at an EdTech Startup, worked around the world as a designer for top architecture and design firms, and taught extensively in the architecture and design fields.

Erin is a designer and registered architect with a decade of experience in the fields of design, business development, and creative consulting. She currently works as the Founder and Principal of Matter, a design firm that solves problems that span from brand and digital experiences to the built environment.

Erin has worked extensively in the venture and start-up space in the Northeast, with early-stage companies as well as VC funds on design, visual, narrative strategy, and brand development.

She has also taught and coached in architecture and design fields at universities including Harvard, Cornell, Parsons, The City University of New York and the New Jersey Institute of Technology.

In this episode, Jake and Erin discuss the disconnect between architecture education and the profession, how our skills and training can be invaluable to many different roles in different industries, and how you can create and design an architecture career that fits you.

  • We speak about their new book Out of Architecture, why many firms are losing out on talent and talent retention due to their hiring processes
  • We discuss the challenges that university education faces with the education of the architect
  • And we discuss the taboo or concerns that some young architects may face simply because they are part of a network that is exploring possibilities outside of the traditional profession

Today we will be speaking with Michael Bernard AIA. He is the founder of Virtual Practice Consulting, where he provides strategic advice to design and construction firms.

He was a professor in the architecture department at The California College of the Arts in San Francisco for many years and previously served as a director on the board of the San Francisco chapter of the AIA and on the board of the AIA California Council. He’s led several committees and served as Architect Advisor to the academy for emerging professionals at the AIA San Francisco.

Michael’s Origin Story

Michael discovered architecture as a 10 year old when he was inspired by house plan magazines at the supermarket and built 3D models as a child. In college, he studied psychology with the intent of becoming a clinical psychologist. While he was teaching French to exchange students during summer school, a colleague noticed him sketching and asked if he’d ever thought of architecture as a profession.

Michael started in design and worked for Charles Moore in Los Angeles. After some time, he went to work for a larger technical firm because he wanted to learn what the underpinning was of design. Over the course of his career, he always wanted more. He finally realized that what he loved most about architecture is the creative team that makes a project happen.

In today’s episode we will be discussing:

  • The importance of defining culture in a business for high performance
  • The evolution of leadership all business owners must  journey through
  • We discuss the dangers of ‘Design React Mode’

Walter Marin was born in Latin America but raised in the heart of New York.

The son of an immigrant cabinetmaker, he was raised with an appreciation for craftsmanship that led to his life-long love of the built environment.

He completed a BS/BA in Architecture in 1982 and worked with well-known architectural design firms including the Howard Golden firm prior to establishing Marin Associates in 1985.

Upon obtaining his architectural certification, Walter converted his growing firm into Marin Architects.

Supported by Walter’s keen business sense and creative aptitude, the firm has since developed a strong roster of repeat clientele and a sterling reputation.

Ever community-minded, Walter gives back by serving as the Vice Chair of The National Hispanic Business Group and the Bronx Community College Foundation Board.

In this episode, you’ll discover:

  • Common misconceptions about working with developers
  • How Marin became a valued problem solver instead of simply a vendor
  • How Marin carved out a niche in various sectors including hospitality and multi-family

Today you’ll also hear from Patrick MacLeamy, the former CEO of HOK.

During his 50-year tenure at HOK, MacLeamy witnessed the firm’s growth from a single midwestern office to 27 locations across the globe offering architecture, interiors, engineering, planning and more.

MacLeamy joined HOK St. Louis in 1967, after which he helped establish the firm’s San Francisco outpost in 1970 - later becoming managing principal of that office.  He joined HOK’s executive committee in 1995 and was named COO five years later.  In 2003, HOK shareholders elected MacLeamy Chief Executive Officer.

He led the firm for 13 years.  In 2016, MacLeamy chose a new CEO for HOK, remaining as Chairman for one more year before retiring —or as he likes to say, “repurposing.”

MacLeamy is also the Chairman of buildingSMART International, which works to achieve open standards for the exchange of digital information in the building and infrastructure industries.  He was a founding member of buildingSMART, in 1994.

In today’s episode, we discuss how your practice can prepare for the next recession. You’ll discover the 4 pillars of a successful firm, and more.

Today's episode is a replay from our Business of Architecture UK podcast. It was so great, we wanted to share it here as well.

Acrylicize, a multidisciplinary design studio in Hackney, has cornered a niche market which occupies a number of different territories, from fine art and interior design, to architecture. They are masterful at creating brand experience and awareness in corporate and commercial environments.

Rion spoke with Global Managing Director, Paul Arad. They discussed the firm's early days, how they found clients, negotiated contracts, and nurtured relationships to grow the business to an international firm with offices in London, New York, and Seattle.

They've done this by following principles of developing client relationships, attracting talent, and nurturing a team so talent sticks around for a long time.

Enjoy this fascinating conversation and let us know your thoughts.

As we’ve researched and worked with firm after firm, a common thread stands out from those firms who have more success than others - the caliber and experience of people working at the firm.

This is why the People Playbook is one of the four pillars of the SMART Practice Method.

On today’s episode you’ll hear from Lance Cayko, co-founder of F9 Productions, an architectural and design-build practice based in Colorado.

Lance and his business partner, Alex Gore, have built their practice from just themselves to over 10 employees in the past seven years.

So I asked, "Lance - what has been the hardest part about growing a firm from no employees to 10 employees?"

In today’s episode, you’ll discover Lance’s answer, and sage advice.

To learn more about Lance Cayko, visit: https://www.f9productions.com/

What is the key to having a successful architecture practice? There are many ways to answer this question, and everyone defines success differently.

What does success mean to you? Consider this question for a moment.

What does success mean to you?

I’ll guess that your definition of success isn’t being financially stretched, burned out or unfulfilled.

Recently, I heard an interview with Oprah Winfrey where she said, “no one succeeds alone.”

And she repeated it twice. “No one succeeds alone.”

So however you define success, consider that you can’t have success alone - as an island.

What is the key to building a team of people around you - of team members, clients and associates?

That’s one of the things we touch on in this interview. Alex Gore, co-host of the “Inside the Firm” podcast interviewed me for the Inside the Firm podcast, and I thought you’d want to hear it also, so I’m reposting it here.

If you’re a podcast listener, you’ll definitely want to check out the “Inside the Firm” podcast with Lance Cayko and Alex Gore where they share the behind-the-scenes story as they build their Design-Build firm F9 Productions.

Have you ever been in a place you felt you weren't supposed to be within your career or business? Or like you're not doing what you feel like you're supposed to be doing?

I certainly have. It's easy to get caught in this, to keep doing what you're doing, ignoring that voice inside, fearing the risk.

Yet listening to our fear keeps us small, it keeps the world from getting the gift we could be giving.

Architect Ibrahim Greenidge came to this place in his career, where he decided he needed to make a shift.

In today's episode, you'll discover how Greenidge started his practice and grew it to a team of five. Greenidge shares his number one challenge running an architectural practice today and the three top principles that have been his guiding stars for success.

Greenidge is the co-founder of BOLT Architecture, a Brooklyn-based architectural practice.

In 2017, he was appointed to serve as President of the New York Coalition of Black Architects. He won the 2015 Jumaane Stewart Recognition Award, his designs have been featured in the UN's Remembering Slavery Exhibit as well as the Center for Architecture's "Say It Loud: Distinguished Black Designers of New York Coalition of Black Architects". In 2017, Greenidge was acknowledged among the Top 20 Distinguished Minority Architects and Designers by Architizer.

Fortunately, there's an effective way to win without lowering prices.

Hello, and welcome to the Business of Architecture. I'm your host, Rion Willard.

And this week, I’m speaking with Joseph Spierer, owner of California-based architecture firm, Joseph Spierer Architects, Inc.

Growing up in Los Angeles County, Joseph attended and received his Architecture degree from The University of Arizona School of Architecture, and got his architecture license in the State of California.

After interning with, then working for, several leading Southern California Architects of note, Joseph opened his own Architecture practice in the South Bay, specializing in custom residential and small commercial projects.

In addition to practicing architecture, Joseph is a managing member of several real estate holding companies and is one of the owners and partners of JAM Properties, which identifies and assembles real estate investment and development opportunities throughout Southern California.

In this episode, Joseph gives a little glimpse of how the firm operates, how they win work, how they mitigate risks from onboarding a client to the design process, and what, for him, makes for a successful team.

We also discuss the valuable skill of deep listening and how it's instrumental in bringing projects to life in a personal way, the company's vision and mission, and what's in store for Joseph and his team in 2022.

His retail projects have been incredibly successful and have dovetailed architecture design, brand identity, and of course, architectural expression.

In this conversation, I speak with Eugene about the genesis of his business, how he markets and goes to and finds new clients, how he has been maintaining client relationships, and also how he has been navigating the challenges of a relatively young and growing architecture practice.

This week, we have Bruce Haden, Co-Founder of Human Studio, a design and architecture firm based in Vancouver, Canada.

In his work as an architect, Bruce saw a problem. He found that he often lacked hard metrics and data to inform or at least justify design decisions. As a result, he found that clients ultimately and frequently based their decisions on more hard and measurable data like construction costs.

But how do we quantify or calculate the more intangible elements of design? More importantly, how do we justify these costs or expenditures to these clients who are, ultimately, footing the bill?

As a result of his inquiry, Haden developed and spearheaded the design software application called FLUID Sociability that measures the sociability of buildings and spaces.

Ultimately, this is a story that lies at the heart of what it means here at the Business of Architecture.

Business of Architecture is simply this: When you have an important message and a mission, when you have value to give to the world, how do you get the opportunity tome that impact?

How do take an idea and vet that idea? How do you then find the funding or the ability or the resources to bring that idea to the world? And how do you then make it visible and help it have an impact?

This week, I am speaking to Founder and President of Brandon Architects, Chris Brandon.

Chris founded Brandon Architects in 2009, specializing in high-end residential. He works on an incredible array of clientele, doing really extraordinary homes in California.

In this conversation, we discuss the early days of Chris' practice, how he how he weathered the storm brought by recession in 2009 and grew his practice, the tale of bringing on those first employees, and how he was doing business development and client acquisition.

Then we discuss some of the innovations Chris has in the delivery of his projects, how he curates the client experience and ensures that he's only involved where they need to be involved thus making their delivery process much more efficient and reducing the amount of scope creep.

We also discuss some of the leadership evolution that Chris has been going through, some of the work that we've been doing together on the SMART Practice program and of course Chris' vision for 2022.

Today, we have a very special episode for you. Here at Business of Architecture, it is one of our mantras that we "Lead from what we live," meaning that we try our darnedest to make sure that we are actually implementing and doing all the things that we talk about and all the things that we teach.

What we're going to be talking about today is about when there are lapses in a business in terms of teamwork, in terms of processes. What happens when the ball gets dropped?

What we're hoping from this conversation today is for you to see a little bit behind the curtain of Business of Architecture, see how we run our business, how we coach our clients and the firms we work with, and how we dealt with the little fire we had in our own business.

We would love to hear your feedback on what you've learned from this episode and how YOU handle your own little hiccups in your own business.
